Music

Music

At Long Toft Primary School, our Music curriculum is designed with concepts in an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning. As a school we follow the Charanga Musical School Units of Work, which enable children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning. Learning about the same musical concept through different musical activities enables a more secure, deeper learning and mastery of musical skills.

Intent

  • To encourage children to listen to and appreciate different styles and genres of music;
  • To learn to use their voices expressively, singing from memory and from notation;
  • To have opportunities to learn to play a tuned instrument ;
  • To experiment with, create, select and combine sounds in their own compositions;
  • To have an understanding of key musical terminology and concepts;
  • To use technology to present their compositional ideas;

In Key stage 1, children are taught to sing songs, chants and rhymes and use their voices expressively and creatively.  Children are taught to play tuned and untuned instruments and to clap with control and rhythmic accuracy. They listen to and understand a range of live and recorded music and begin to use specialist musical terms such as rhythm, pitch and the names of instruments.

In Key stage 2 children are taught to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control. They sing and play in parts. They are taught to develop an understanding of musical composition, organising and manipulating ideas within musical structures and reproducing sounds from aural memory and from notation.  Children learn to appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music from different traditions and composers.  They learn to develop an understanding of the history and theory of music, and use specialist music terminology with increased sophistication e.g ostinato.  In Lower Key Stage 2, all children take part in lessons led by a specialist music teacher and learn to play an instrument.

A child-led approach to musical learning.

Vocabulary

Previous learning and vocabulary is explicitly shared at the beginning of a project and taught systematically in a carefully sequenced series of lessons.

Impact

How will this be measured?

Pupil voice and books will show…

  • An engaging music curriculum which develops their working musically ability.
  • Photographs of children taking part in music lessons
