Long Toft Primary campaigners recognised by the City of Doncaster Council

School children from Doncaster have found their own way to share vital online safety messaging with their peers, thanks to a new campaign in the city.

Doncaster Safety Net is a year-long campaign supported by Doncaster Children’s Safeguarding Partnership, the NSPCC and South Yorkshire Police aimed at helping children and young people across the city stay safer online.

More than 4,600 online child abuse image crimes have been recorded by South Yorkshire Police in the last five years, so empowering children with the knowledge and confidence to recognise and speak up about abuse is vital.

The Stainforth steering group has recently been collaborating with the NSPCC working on online safety. Gail Sayles from NSPCC has delivered multiple workshops to the steering group regarding online safety. The young people were very engaged and showed an interest to support other young people across Doncaster.

From this opportunity they have created a tool kit and an awareness video to help other young people to be safe online. The leaflet will be distributed across all Doncaster schools.

After a visit to the steering group from Damien Allen, Chief Executive of City of Doncaster Council, the NSPCC held a launch event in the Doncaster Chambers on 24th April 2024. The young people launched their tool kit and shared a parent feedback video.

Doncaster Read Aloud Competition - Long Toft Semi Finalist

The Doncaster Read Aloud is a Doncaster-wide competition where children perform a text to an audience of 100 people, and a judging panel.

After winning the semi-finals on World Book Day, Ivayla moved forward to the final, which was held at the Doncaster Gallery, Library and Museum, on 27th March 2024.  She performed her text (Little Badman by Humza Arshad) incredibly and made the whole school very proud. She was presented with a certificate and a number of books, by the Civic Mayor, for her impeccable reading.

Also, a huge ‘well done’ to our Y5/Y6 semi-finalists: Chase, Corey, Isaac, Lola, Lucas and Charley.
